Mission Bhagiratha — Drinking Water to Every Household

Mission Bhagiratha

Mission Bhagiratha is Telangana's flagship drinking water scheme that provides purified tap water from major rivers (Godavari, Krishna) to every household in the state — urban and rural.

Scale

Launched in 2016, Mission Bhagiratha is one of the world's largest drinking water schemes, covering over 20,000 habitations and connecting to Godavari and Krishna river water. The project won the United Nations Public Service Award in 2018.

How it Works

  1. Water drawn from Godavari / Krishna rivers at intake points
  2. Treated at district-level water treatment plants
  3. Pumped through a network of pipelines to water storage tanks in each village/locality
  4. Distributed to individual household taps

Current Status

Coverage has expanded significantly since launch. Telangana claims near-universal coverage, though some habitations still face supply issues. Check district-level coverage status at the official portal.
