Telangana Folk Poetry

Telangana has a rich oral poetry tradition distinct from classical Telugu literature — rooted in the dialects, agricultural rhythms, and social history of the region.

Genres

Laavani: Performed poetry with commentary, often satirical, on political and social events.

Oggu Katha: Narrative performances by the Oggu Dollu community, recounting the story of Mallanna (Shiva as a peasant deity).

Janapada Geethalu: Broadly "folk songs" — harvest songs, wedding songs, lullabies, and work songs specific to each community.

Veedhi Bhagavatam: Street theatre combining song, dance, and narrative on themes from the Puranas.

Notable Poets

Kaloji Narayana Rao (1914–2002) — known as the "voice of Telangana" — wrote in the regional dialect championing human dignity and the Telangana statehood movement. His birthday (9 September) is celebrated as Telugu Language Day in Telangana.
