Nirmal Craft

Nirmal (Nirmal district) is famous for two GI-tagged crafts: Nirmal Toys (painted wooden toys) and Nirmal Paintings (oil-on-wood panel paintings).

Toys

Nirmal toys are crafted from soft pourashi wood (Chaka wood — Pterospermum acerifolium), carved, then painted with bright natural dye-based paints and varnished.

Paintings

Nirmal paintings depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and local mythology on a gesso-painted wooden base, with a distinctive flat, decorative style. The style shows influences from the Persian miniature tradition that entered Hyderabad via the Nizams.
