The Banjara People

The Lambadi (also Banjara, Sugali, Vanjara) are a nomadic trading community found across South India, with a significant population in Telangana. They are classified as a Scheduled Tribe in Telangana.

Distinctive Culture

Banjara women are recognised by their elaborate embroidered costumes — heavy embroidery with mirrors and cowrie shells on red and green cloth, with distinctive silver jewellery. Their craft tradition is a significant part of Telangana's textile heritage.

Language

Banjara language (Gor Boli / Gorboli) is a Rajasthani-derived Indo-Aryan language distinct from Telugu. Increasing Telugu influence is leading to language shift, particularly among younger generations.
