Dakhni Urdu

Dakhni (Deccan Urdu) is a dialect of Urdu that developed in the Deccan Sultanates (Bidar, Bijapur, Golconda) from the 14th century onwards — pre-dating Hindustani as a literary language in the north.

Characteristics

Dakhni incorporates vocabulary from Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Persian, and Arabic. It retains archaic Persianate features dropped from modern standard Urdu and has a softer phonology than north Indian Urdu.

Literary Heritage

The earliest literary Urdu texts are in Dakhni — Kadam Rao Padam Rao (14th century), the Qutb Shahi court poetry of Golconda, and the Nizam-era literature of Hyderabad. Poets like Wali Dakhni, Siraj Aurangabadi, and Mir Taqi Mir were influenced by Dakhni.

Current Status

Dakhni is spoken by older Muslim communities in Hyderabad's Old City. The Hyderabadi Urdu accent and vocabulary are distinctive and instantly recognisable. It is classified as Vulnerable by linguists.
