Bathukamma Paatalu

Bathukamma songs (Bathukamma Paatalu) are a corpus of women's folk songs sung during the nine days of the Bathukamma festival in Telangana. They represent one of the richest living oral traditions in South India.

Themes

The songs cover: goddess worship and praise (Gauri, Lakshmi, Saraswati), social commentary and satire (family dynamics, in-laws, marriage), nature and agriculture, and historical events (the Nizam era, the Hyderabad State integration, the statehood movement).

Structure

Songs are led by one woman and repeated by the group as they circle the Bathukamma floral stack. The circular movement — women holding hands — is itself a form of community expression.

Contemporary Practice

The Telangana government has institutionalised Bathukamma songs in school curricula. Major collections have been compiled by scholars; contemporary composers and singers create new Bathukamma songs each year.
